I'm Chris.

I'm a dad. My son Jared is autistic. I'm Puerto Rican, born and raised in the Bronx.

I'm not a doctor, a therapist, or a lawyer. I'm a dad who's been around autism a long time, and this site is the plain-talk help I wish somebody had handed me.

Where this comes from

When Jared started school, his kindergarten teacher sat him apart from the other kids. Like he was the problem. I went in and told her she was missing how amazing my son was, and that I would never let him be made an outcast.

That's still the job. Be your kid's advocate, not their adversary. And don't let anybody else be their adversary either.

Later I worked with autistic and special-needs adults, training them on work tasks that built independence and purpose. One of them, Reginald, could hear the year you were born and tell you your age on the spot. No calculator. We tested him for twenty minutes. He never missed.

The world underestimates our people. I've seen it from both sides. That's why I do this.

What I believe

They need to feel safe around you. Period, point blank.

Not more discipline. Not forcing them to fit. Patience, kindness, laughing with them, and letting them know they're appreciated. That's what opens the door.
